In this video Dr McCarthy discusses a common misconception surrounding wisdom teeth extraction. Patients often believe that in order to have their wisdom teeth removed they will need to be hospitalised and sedated. In actual fact, only about 1 in 100 patients require more complex surgery. 9 out of 10 patients don’t need surgery and possibly around 7 or 8 out of 10 are the simplest extractions you can perform as a dentist.
“If a patient chooses to go into hospital to get their wisdom teeth removed rather than visit a dentist for an assessment first, they can end up spending a lot more money on the treatment than necessary.”
The more simplistic wisdom teeth removal appointments can take as little as 15 minutes to complete. Often times this form of wisdom teeth extraction will be carried out using the following method:
Firstly one of our expert dentists will administer 2 injections to ensure comfort. Once the solutions are in action, we will skilfully extract the tooth. This process can take as little as 60 seconds to complete. We will ensure you have all the information you need to help you on your way to a full recovery.
Minor surgical extraction
Minor surgical wisdom teeth removal will generally take around 30 minutes to complete. Dr McCarthy will discuss with you the treatment details during your assessment appointment.
Complex wisdom teeth extraction
For patients with wisdom teeth that require a more complex extraction procedure, you will be referred to a specialist. These extractions are carried out under a general anaesthetic to assist in comfort.
Post wisdom teeth removal care
Depending on the complexity of your case, your post treatment care will vary. For patients who only had a simple extraction, there will generally be minimal/no swelling, no bruising and common paracetamol for a few days will be suitable to cover the pain.
During your appointment Dr McCarthy will provide you with all the information you need to help you on our way to a smooth recovery.
