Meet the dentist behind the practice here in Brisbane
We try to keep it simple here at Lutwyche Dental.
We are a friendly group, we work towards keeping people at ease about their appointments and our treatments are quality and quite affordable. We offer a warranty on all our work with 6 months on fillings to help people feel secure about their treatments here at Lutwyche Dental.
Looking for a dentist you can rely on in a hurry?
Our main aim is never to say we can’t see you.
If you have a dental emergency, we will always work towards finding a way to fit you in. If we ever need to adjust a patient’s appointment, we will explain that it is an emergency and they generally will understand. Because in reality, if that patient was in that same situation, they would like to think that we would do the same for them!
Discussing the cost of a visit to the dentist and dental phobia
Do you have a fear of the dentist?
Here at Lutwyche Dental, we work towards helping people who have a fear of the dentist to overcome their fear. If we can treat people with a dental phobia painlessly, the patient will walk out of here feeling far more relaxed about dental visits.
Your first visit and overcoming the fear of the dental bill
The first dental visit will basically just be an assessment of what the patient’s requirements are. Some patients might come in with a toothache or a broken tooth and they really just want to know how much it will cost to fix it. Others come in for just their regular check-up or perhaps they haven’t been to the dentist in years. Generally they just want to get some idea of how much money they are going to have to spend to get their teeth back in tip-top shape.
Often patients are surprised that their mouth isn’t as bad as they think. They come in saying “Aaahh I haven’t been to the dentist, I’ve got a terrible situation in my mouth” when in fact they may only need one or two minor fillings and a good clean. Patients generally feel relieved that things are a lot better than they expected.

What does your toothache say about you?
Some people have had toothaches for up to 6 or 12 months. The only reason they haven’t made an appointment is because they are afraid of going to the dentist, so they put up with an intense pain and take a lot of pain killers.
Eventually the pain can get so intense that the pain killers are no longer having an effect. By this point, the patient has been compelled to pick up the phone and call the dentist. 99 out of 100 say they wished they had done it 12 months ago because the treatment wasn’t how they expected.
“It was simple, painless and they walked out, problem solved.”
The main thing is the longer that you leave it, the more expensive the treatment becomes. A mild toothache that could have been restored with a simple filling could turn into a worse toothache, a root canal or even extraction, which involves loss of a tooth. The longer you leave it to more likely you run the risk of losing a tooth.
How to save a tooth when you knock it out
Did you know that if your tooth is knocked out, there is a chance that you can put it back in?
Dr Darryl McCarthy explains how to save your tooth if a tooth gets knocked out. Watch the video for a step by step process.
Why would you need a wisdom teeth removed?
The main reason you need wisdom teeth removed is because it’s causing pain.
The wisdom tooth is trying to erupt but because it can’t erupt properly it can get an infection around it. That infection leads to more discomfort and as time goes on, it becomes increasingly painful and the only solution is to remove the tooth.
A lot of people still have wisdom teeth around the age of 40 and 50 still and they have never needed them to be removed. I find with people that once they get over the age of 25, if the tooth isn’t causing them any grief, the tooth can be left alone.
Your wisdom tooth removal appointment
For a general wisdom tooth extraction appointment you will receive 2 injections, just like any other extraction appointment, and it takes about 60 seconds to remove the tooth. Generally patients have been and gone in as little as 15 minutes. More often than not for this type of extraction there will be no swelling, no bruising and simple paracetamol for a few days will cover the pain.
We do perform minor surgical appointments here as well. Generally they will take up to half an hour. For the more complex wisdom tooth extractions (about 1 in every 100 patients), the patient will be referred to a specialist and their wisdom tooth extraction will be carried out under general anaesthetic, which is more comfortable for the patient.
You wisdom tooth consultation
What to expect
Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed and those who do generally only require simple extraction. 9 out of 10 patients don’t need surgery. Probably 7 or 8 out of 10 are the simplest extractions you can do in dentistry.
It’s an individual thing that each person has to assess and that’s why we offer a free 5 minute wisdom tooth consultation to explain to people that their particular situation may be very simple or it could also be quite difficult. But it’s more likely its simple and it’s a simple job to remove the tooth at reasonable expense.
If you go into hospital to get them removed – which some people do because they have an innate fear of having their teeth removed in the dental chair – they end up spending an awful lot of extra money.
