Did you know that according to a survey conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 99.7% of adults believe that a smile is an important social asset? 96% of adults in the survey also believed an attractive smile makes a person more appealing to members of the opposite sex.
“White teeth can give the appearance of good health and make a dull smile bold and inviting.”

#1 – Get a tan
We’re not saying you should waste your skin away in the sunshine for hours on end, but when it comes to helping your smile appear whiter, an even tan goes a long way. Try a bronze spray-tan or tanning lotion but stick to the natural products.
If you are spending a lot of time at the beach, make sure you’re wearing sunscreen. The fastest way to age your appearance is from excess UV exposure and by wearing sunscreen you can avoid counter-tan attacks from nasty peeling.
#2 – Watch what you’re drinking
Caffeinated drinks like coffee and tea gradually stain teeth over time. We understand that it is a lot to ask to cut caffeine entirely (although that’d do wonders for your teeth), so we suggest you look into heat-friendly straws that are BPA-free to stop stains. It’s also important to remember that high sugar content drinks like soft drinks are terribly damaging to your smile so steer clear of those.
#3 – Invest in an electric toothbrush
Although a regular toothbrush is still capable of brushing your teeth, an electric toothbrush used for the same amount of time is more likely to produce more thorough clean. There are a range of different types for those who suffer from tooth sensitivity and there are even some with two minute timers so you can keep track of your routine. Not only can electronic toothbrushes help you keep your own smile shining but they’re also a great hit with the kids.
#4 – Time to floss!
Do you know what it is that darkens up those pearly whites? While you eat your meals throughout the day an unfriendly gathering of bacteria and plaque starts to collect along the gums and between the teeth, causing discolouration.
For all those little cracks and crevices that the toothbrush cannot reach, dental floss is able to help. There are even floss brands that claim they have added whitening capabilities. Generally these just have added abrasive coats on them to give a more thorough clean.
#5 – Try whitening toothpastes
A whitening toothpaste can clear away most surface stains from your teeth but it is important to be careful not to brush to hard as they may cause damage the enamel. If you are unsure about whitening toothpaste or a whitening floss product, when you come in for our next check-up feel free to bring it in with you and we will give it an assessment on how appropriate it is or your oral health.
#6 – Chew sugar-free chewing gum
Like drinking water, chewing sugar-free gum after meals helps to clear away the food particles that get caught in between teeth. Clinical studies have even shown that you can help to prevent decay by chewing on sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after a meal.
There are other benefits of sugar-free gum as well. A study published in the British Dental Journal revealed that patients who chewed sugar-free gum experienced significantly less tooth sensitivity during a teeth whitening in-office dental visit compared to those who didn’t.
#7 – Whiten your teeth at the dentist
