Restorative Dentistry Brisbane

Tooth restorations are a method of repairing damaged or replacing lost teeth with natural-looking materials.

Restorative dentistry is a branch of dentistry available at Lutwyche Dental in Brisbane that is aimed at restoring your teeth and gums to a healthy balance. Examples of restorations include:

These methods of repair are used when a tooth has suffered from one or more of the following conditions:

  • Decay
  • Loss of teeth
  • Chips or cracks
  • Root canal infection
  • Weakening of tooth structure
  • Wear from grinding or clenching
  • Deterioration of previous restoration

Why repairing the tooth is necessary

When our teeth become damaged or fall out, it is important we source a solution. This is because where damage has affected the tooth, it can worsen. This can cause infection and lead to tooth loss.

What if you’ve suffered tooth loss?

Tooth loss can be a devastating affair for patients. Even it is not within the ‘smile zone’ and you don’t feel as if your appearance is affected, your oral health is reliant on virtually all of your teeth. Tooth loss can also affect things like your bite and if severe can even make a difference to the structure of your face.

Thankfully, with the use of dental crowns and bridges, tooth loss can be improved. These are fixed prosthetic devices that can be cemented into your mouth. Crowns and bridges can be used for both broken teeth and for tooth loss, and offer a more permanent solution than dentures.

Fillings

As the most common restoration, fillings are generally used to restore the initial stages of decay. Here at Lutwyche Dental we use fillings designed from materials that do not contain metals.

Used in both general dentistry and restorative dentistry, fillings literally ‘fill’ the minor cavities created by decay and create a barrier to stop the tooth from being effected by further damage. Fillings restore general functionality to your bite and strengthen the weakened tooth.

You may need a filling if you have minor decay. This is caused from a variety of factors, but can mostly be put down to oral health. If you don’t brush and floss your teeth properly, you allow bacteria to build up in your mouth. This can break down your tooth and cause this decay. If left untreated, the infection can worsen, calling for more serious actions to be taken.

Keep your oral health on track

If you have previously been told you require a filling or other form of restoration, ensure you follow up that appointment as soon as possible. The longer you allow your decayed tooth to remain damaged the more likely the decay will create far worse problems for you in future.

Of course, the best way to avoid this outcome is to practise good oral hygiene. By brushing and flossing correctly and avoiding certain foods and beverages you will be far less likely to incur these unwanted consequences.
